Industry Context

Kenya has long been regarded as one of the world’s most distinguished coffee origins, celebrated for its intensely vibrant acidity and unmistakable berry-driven flavor profiles. Among its many offerings, the Nyeri region stands out as a benchmark for quality, producing some of the most complex and sought-after lots in the specialty coffee sector. This lot, composed of the iconic SL28 and SL34 varieties and processed using Kenya’s signature double-washed fermentation method, delivers a cup that is as structured as it is exhilarating.

Origin & Varietal

Region: Nyeri, Kenya
Altitude: 1,600 – 1,900 m
Varieties: SL28 / SL34
Processing: Kenyan double-washed fermentation
Roast level: Medium-Light (Agtron #65-70)

The SL28 and SL34 varieties are regarded as Kenya’s flagship cultivars. In the 1930s, the Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya conducted an extensive selection program, collecting 42 different cultivars from Tanzania, Yemen, and other regions. Through rigorous screening, SL28 and SL34 emerged as the most promising — well-adapted to Kenya’s high-altitude growing conditions and capable of producing exceptional cup quality. Together, they are now synonymous with Kenya’s specialty coffee identity.

Beyond genetics, Kenya’s distinctive double-washed fermentation process plays a critical role in shaping the final cup profile. After pulping, the coffee undergoes a dry fermentation lasting 24 to 36 hours, followed by a thorough wash and a second fermentation cycle. This meticulous approach encourages the development of Kenya’s signature berry-like acidity while ensuring exceptional cup clarity and cleanliness.

Flavor Profile

Aroma (Ground): Intense berry and blackcurrant notes emerge immediately upon opening the bag, underscored by a hint of citrus blossom freshness.

Aroma (Brewing): As hot water is poured, plum and grapefruit-like sweet-tart aromatics are released, with caramel sweetness forming a supportive base layer.

Flavor Progression:

  • Hot: A pronounced blackcurrant acidity strikes the palate with remarkable clarity and vibrancy — bright and clean, with no off-notes
  • Warm: The plum and grapefruit acidity softens as caramel sweetness emerges, creating a balanced sweet-tart interplay
  • Cool: Acidity further recedes, allowing brown sugar and caramel sweetness to take center stage, with a clean, lingering finish

This is a coffee of both attack and equilibrium. Its acidity is not gentle but explosive — a fruit bomb that detonates on the palate — yet the sweetness that follows restores balance with precision. A subtle caramel aftertaste lingers on the tongue, inviting the next sip.

Brewing Guidelines

  • Pour-over (V60) — Recommended: 1:15 ratio / 92-93°C / Medium-fine grind — optimally articulates the acidity and complexity of this coffee
  • AeroPress: 1:14 ratio / 90-91°C / Medium-fine grind — yields a cleaner cup with more concentrated acidity
  • Cold Brew: 1:12 ratio / Ambient temperature / Coarse grind — steep refrigerated for 12-16 hours for a berry-forward, juice-like brew
  • Espresso / Milk-based: Not recommended — the pronounced acidity of this coffee does not pair well with milk and may produce unpleasant sour notes

Recommended For

  • Ideal for: Fruit-forward coffee enthusiasts who appreciate vibrant berry and citrus profiles; specialty coffee drinkers seeking distinctive, high-character beans; pour-over brewers who enjoy exploring layered flavor development; those looking for a refreshing cold brew option in warmer months
  • Not recommended for: Drinkers who prefer low-acid or no-acid coffees; those who exclusively drink dark roasts or Sumatran-style profiles; consumers who primarily prepare milk-based beverages
